Two Skiffs
linocut
10 x 15 inches

These skiffs were tied up to a rickety pier on Tangier Island, a remote island in the Chesapeake, accessible only by boat. Island families date back several centuries and until recent years led very secluded lives.
Re: Generations
linocut, chine collé, with cutting, collage, digital laser printing, and Prismacolor rubbing on kitakata and Rives papers
10 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches
This image is inspired by old family photos of my mom, her brother, and their parents, as well as their Victorian home. The ruler is a symbol of the passage of time. The architectural framework is taken from details of the house, which also appears in the opened doorway dangling from my uncle's fishing rod. The title, Re:Generations, refers first to the two generations of the family depicted and secondly to the notion that each generation is a regeneration of the family.

The Climbing Tree
linocut, chine collé, pen and ink on kitakata and American Masters papers
6 1/4 x 63 3/8 inches
This leporello, or accordion-fold book, relates a story about the climbing tree that served as an icon of my childhood. It was a center of activity and provided us with a place to declare as our own space within the neighborhood. Years after its role in our lives faded to dim memories, the tree flourished despite brutal pruning, providing us with a link to our childhood and serving as a symbol of continuity and perseverence through adversity. It is gently reassuring to me to know that the tree still stands.
